Topics: moderation, conference, curation, technology, creativity, art, performance, culture, Berlin
Date of arrival in Berlin: Some things are better left unspecified!

I discovered AC as they were in charge of a moderation at the French Ambassy in Berlin. The situation could have been tricky for any moderator (due to a lack of time), but AC owned the stage and made it into a very inspiring and empowering moment 🗣

In this episode, AC Coppens, a renowned strategist, conference curator, host, TED talk and moderator, share their experience from guiding meaningful discussions to their deep understanding of audience engagement 💥

1️⃣ The essential skills of a moderator

2️⃣ The balance between preparation and improvisation

3️⃣ How to captivate an audience and keep them engaged

4️⃣ The evolution of conferences and networking events

Notes from episode #71

From business to performance, AC created their own carrier and  work. In this conversation, AC shares numerous insights and tips about how to master the art of moderation.

Going straight to the point, working with what you have on stage and in the room, including the audience, we go through each step of the process and explore the balance between preparation.

Time is scarce, and AC translates its urgency by owning the material, putting it into words and making sure that the audience has the most out of the unique constellation of people on stage.

With AC, we also talked about their connection with Berlin and how the city changed, time boundaries and the people we meet in different ecosystems. Finally, we talk about going abroad to get foresights and growing expertise and research.

Two of my favorite take away:

  • « Moderation is not just about asking questions, it’s about creating a journey for the audience. »
  • « You need to go where it hurts immediately, so the real conversation can happen. »

More about the guest

Date of Arrival: Some things are better left unspecified!

Reason for Coming to Berlin: ESCP Europe : Academic dreams met urban adventure… – a perfect Berlin cocktail.

What I Love Most About Berlin: Freizügigkeit – that magical German word that screams freedom!

What Bothers Me: I’m so deeply marinated in this city’s cool indifference that nothing phases me anymore. The only more jaded city I lived in was New York…

Top 3 Favorite Places: Nice try, gentrification scouts! These hidden gems are staying hidden. Berlin’s best spots are earned, even if they actually never belong to you, nor to anyone.

Most Berlin-Like Trait: Speaking English in Mitte – the ultimate insider’s irony!

Integration Recipe:

  • Work: Hustle with Berlin’s startup spirit
  • Perform: Life here is your stage – own it!
  • Dance: Club nights are a sonic journey where the beats connect all hearts
  • Date: Mix, mingle, embrace the city’s chaotic, intense, unpredictable romance (if we can talk about romance at all 😉

Homesickness Antidote: Home isn’t a place – it’s a feeling. And right now, it is where my heart is.

Podcast Dream Guest: Bénédicte Savoy – cultural historian extraordinaire.

Reasons to Reach Out: Literally ANY reason works.

Closing Thoughts: Mic drop 😉 🎤
