Episode #61 - Devi Petti

This episode was recorded on 19.09.2024 in the atelier of Sébastien (#1)
in the
Kunstfabrik HB55 in Berlin-Lichtenberg.

Name: Devi Petti, @devipetti
Topics: creativity, jewellery, design, tiny objects, Italy, Berlin
Landed in Berlin: February 2021

I met Devi at one of her workshops exploring the lost-wax technique, as I was creating my very first piece of handmade jewellery. I loved the experience and was fascinated by her tiny lively world, full of organic shapes, nature, insects and colours.

Born and raised on the Amalfi coast, Devi escaped lockdown arriving in Berlin to start her own business. In this episode, discover Devi’s career and creative universe. Have fun!

Notes from episode #61

It was an honour and a great pleasure to sit down for the first time with a jewellery artist/maker. I was very curious to find out about Devi’s background, from her studies to launching an independent creative practice in Berlin.

Devi studied industrial design in Italy. Her encounter with a goldsmith introduced her to the lost-wax technique, which she has been working on almost daily for over ten years. As the pandemic hit the world, forcing people to withdraw and reflect on their lives, Devi moved to Berlin, which she had visited several times in the past.

From process (working directly with material rather than concept), making small decorative objects for every aspect of life, to collaborating with others, discover Devi’s creative daily life.

More about the guest

Date of your arrival in Berlin: I arrived in February 2021 in a snow-white Berlin.

Why did you come to Berlin? Before moving here, I had lived in Rome for over a decade and there, especially with the lockdown, life felt increasingly stagnant. So, when a friend offered to escape and share her flat in Berlin for few months, I seized the opportunity without hesitation. More than three years after we’re both still here.

What do you like the most about Berlin? The easyness. I like that despite the size and diversity, everything is simple and very accessible.

What bothers you the most? In Berlin the gaze is always obstructed, the flatness of the city never offers moments where the eye can get lost or corners that take your breath away. And of course the scarcity of sunlight.

What are your 3 favorite places in Berlin?

  • Funkhaus to end a beautiful summer day eating a pizza and looking at the sunset;
  • Do you read me?! bookshop, to get lost among the many selected titles of books and magazines;
  • and my studio in Libauer str. 6.

What is the most Berlin-like thing about you? Difficult question, if I think of a habit that has changed in me since I moved to Berlin, the first thing that comes to mind is drinking oat milk cappucino until late afternoon.

Your recipe for a successful integration? Be open-minded and curious.

Your recipe for homesickness? Watching old Italian movies.

Who would you like to hear on the podcast? Since we talked about it when we met, it would be interesting to know more about Studio Beurre.

For what reasons could we contact you? New projects! I am always open to possible new collaborations with other people, would love to use my technique and combine it with other materials, processes and other functions (I can imagine small metal details such as handles for furniture or buttons for clothes). Or if you want to create a special piece of jewellery for yourself I’m her to give shape to it.

Do you want to add anything? Thank you for your curiosity and enthusiasm Gabrielle 🙂
